Dilli and two others tied for Amateur lead

There was a three-way tie for the first-round lead at 1-over-par 71, and two more players were a stroke back, but for most of the 139-man field in the 93rd annual Middle Atlantic Golf Association Amateur championship, Baltimore Country Club's superb East Course proved to be just too much golf course.

Jeff Thomas, the 1993 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion from Plainfield, N.J., sank a 6-iron shot for a hole-in-one at the fourth hole and went on to join early finisher Greg Bisconti (35-36), of Mount Vernon, N.Y., with 36-35. Tim Dilli, a Hunt Valley Golf Club member from Towson, made it a three-way tie when he checked in late in the afternoon with 35-36.

On a day when the wind (gusts to 20 mph) and the rough were Allen Barber of Yorktown, Va., and Vince Zachetti of Greensburg, Pa., the 1992 winner of this title, were at 72. There were seven at 73, and only 1969 champion David Oakley of Vienna, Va., was at 74.

Among the 73's were former area standout Doug Ballenger, now working in Augusta, Ga.
