Colorado Rockies -- Announced that they will not exercise a $2.95 million option on OF Howard Johnson, 33, who hit .211 with 10 homers; he will get a $400,000 buyout. Sent 1B Ty Van Burkleo, OF Darrell Sherman and P Bruce Walton outright off the 40-man roster. Announced that IF Vinny Castilla will go to the Arizona Instructional League for 10 days.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Fired batting coach Gene Clines.

Montreal Expos -- Fired Wallace Johnson, Rookie-level Gulf Coast League hitting instructor.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Recalled OF Terry Bradshaw, OF John Mabry, P Gary Buckles, P John Frascatore, P Frank Cimorelli, P Steve Dixon IF Tripp Cromer and IF Darrel Deak from Triple-A Louisville and IF Dan Cholowsky, IF Aaron Holbert, P Doug Creek and OF Basil Shabazz from Double-A Arkansas.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Did not renew the contract of Rookie-level manager Doug Ault.

Cleveland Cavaliers -- F Larry Nance retired.

Denver Nuggets -- Signed F Mark Randall and G Ryan Yoder.

New Jersey Nets -- Named John Wetzel assistant coach.

Colleges

NCAA -- Placed Coastal Carolina on four years' probation for violations in its men's basketball program that included academic fraud. The Chanticleers also were banned from postseason play for a season, won't be allowed on TV this season and will have fewer basketball scholarships the next three seasons.

Gulf South Conference -- Announced addition of Montevallo, Southern Arkansas and Ark.-Monticello.

Football

Atlanta Falcons -- Signed WR Clarence Verdin and S Brett Maxie. Released RB Tony Smith and WR Joe Rogers.

Green Bay Packers -- Signed TE Reggie Johnson. Waived RB Darrell Thompson. Added DE Tommy Fagan to the practice squad. Released DE Jay Williams from the practice squad.

Indianapolis Colts -- Signed WR Mark Jackson. Waived WR Shannon Baker.

New Orleans Saints -- Waived LB Mike Stonebreaker and TE Patt Evans.

NHL -- Announced that Vancouver Canucks LW Gino Odjick has been automatically suspended for the first 10 games of the regular season for leaving the bench to join in an altercation. Coach Rick Ley was suspended for the first five games of the season and was fined $1,000. The Canucks were fined $10,000.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Assigned C Steve Rucchin and G Allan Bester to IHL San Diego.

L Buffalo Sabres -- Assigned D Dean Melanson to AHL Rochester.

Hartford Whalers -- Assigned F Robert Petrovicky, F Igor Chibirev, D John Stevens and D Jim Agnew to AHL Springfield.

New York Islanders -- Sent D Bryan McCabe to WHL Spokane.

Lacrosse

MILL -- Added Rochester, N.Y., for 1995 season, joining Baltimore, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Buffalo, N.Y.
