In the ninth and next-to-last round of the 1994 Toyota/B. J.'s Ocean City Challenge Cup, the Beach Club picked on the pair from Cripple Creek and whomped them 8.5 points to .5 point. John Ruddo and Hunt Crosby were the Beach boys and they clinched a playoff berth with this penultimate effort.

But the big win didn't wrap things up for the Beachmen, since the second-place Ocean City Golf & Yacht Club matched the 8.5 to .5 result and stayed only 4 points behind Beach in the Blue Division. Dave Quelland and Stuart Jarmon were far more than the hapless Green Hill team could handle and they wound up at 51 points to the Beach Club's 55, leaving the Ocean City lads with only needing 2 points in the final match to make the playoffs.

Rehoboth went 8-1 over the Bay Club to clinch home course advantage and put up 53 points atop the Gray Division. In second, at 41.5 points, is Eagle's Landing but the Bay Club is within striking distance at 38 points and Ocean Pines and Nutter's Crossing are both alive with 35.5 and 34.5 points, respectively.

In the rest of the Blue Division, River Run at 43.5, Cripple Creek with 35.5 and Green Hill at 17.5 appear out of any postseason action. River Run would have to sweep 9 points, and they are playing the Beach Club, and OCG&YC net earn at least 2 against Cripple Creek in order for the River guys to sneak into the playoffs.

Those playoffs will match Blue Division first place vs. the Gray Division runner-up and Rehoboth CC vs. the Blue No. 2. The finals will be at Ocean Pines at 1 p.m. Friday.

Things are not even close in the Player of the Year competition, as Dave Quelland has locked up this title in its initial offering.

Quelland, erstwhile head pro at Ocean City and victor in state events, has amassed 16.5 points from only 18 available for a percentage of 91.67 over the 71.43 marks of both Ruddo and Ron Barrows of Rehoboth CC. Even if Quelland was blanked in the 10th-round match and Ruddo and Barrows each won 3 apiece, the Quelland percentage would still be 78.5 to 75.0 for the other two.
