SCHOOL: Atholton High School

HOMETOWN: Columbia

AGE: 16

Jessica serves as the student associate to the five-member Board of Education, a role in which she represents the 36,000 students enrolled in the county's elementary, middle and high schools.

As a student associate, she attends the school board's regularly scheduled meetings and gets to share her opinions on matters important to students, such as year-round education, the budget and changes to school system policies.

At Atholton, she belongs to the Spanish and French clubs and Amnesty International. She was the sophomore class treasurer and a member of the lacrosse team and Students Helping Other People (SHOP). She works as a peer mediator, helping other students resolve their differences peacefully.

Outside of school, she volunteers as a tutor for the Foreign-Born Information and Referral Network and at Harmony Hall, a home for senior citizens. She also takes part in Project PROMise, a student-run consignment shop that sells used prom and homecoming dresses and gives a portion of the profit to the homeless.

She spent the summer in France, where she stayed with a French family to learn about the country's language and culture.

PLANS: She wants to major in linguistics or international business.

HER COMMENTS: She wanted to become a student associate "to give the board a point of view from the students," she said. "I realize every opinion counts and can help them change things. I think some of the issues will be year-round education and the schools that have been changing to four-period days."
