League lets Hickman join candidate forum

The League of Women Voters of Carroll County has announced that Tom Hickman will be included in the organization's Oct. 19 candidate forum.

Mr. Hickman, who lost a close race to Jerry Barnes in the Republican primary Sept. 13, has declared himself a write-in candidate for state's attorney in the general election.

League representatives said Mr. Hickman would be included because he has met the criteria of the group's board of directors: He filed promptly with the board of elections, made a public announcement of his intention to run as a write-in candidate and demonstrates a serious campaign by maintaining headquarters and campaign staff.

The forum is scheduled from 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at West Middle School, 60 Monroe St., Westminster. Candidates for county commissioner, state Senate in Districts 4B and 5 and state's attorney will participate.

Haines to be the host for 'Whistle Stop Tour'

Sen. Larry E. Haines, a Westminster Republican who represents District 5, will be the host for a "Whistle Stop Tour" fund-raiser from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday on the EnterTRAINment line.

The train will leave Westminster at 3 p.m. and stop every 30 minutes in Carroll and Frederick counties. Candidates will give two-minute speeches at each stop.

Other Republicans, including gubernatorial candidate Ellen R. Sauerbrey, U.S. Senate candidate William Brock, U.S. Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett are scheduled to participate.

Radio personality Les Kinsolving will portray President Theodore Roosevelt, who made a whistle stop tour through Carroll in 1912.

Tickets are $75 per person. A sit-down dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Little Davey Livingston and The Heavenly Heirs will entertain.
