Visiting the Enoch Pratt library main branch on Cathedral Street has always been a treat for the intellect. Now, in connection with a gala fund-raising event for the library, the historic main building has been made into a real treat: A 4-foot-long, 2-foot-wide, 28-inch-high cake made of white modeling dough by chef Jan Bandula and six of his students at the Baltimore International Culinary College.

The model centerpiece took a month to create ("The pieces have be dried, and it was very rainy," says the chef) and nearly 40 pounds of royal icing and pastillage (white modeling dough made from powdered sugar, gelatin, glycerin, cream of tartar and water). It was unveiled Sept. 24 at the library.

The experience of creating the model gave the students a chance to develop some new skills, says Mr. Bandula, a native of Poland who is one of only 13 master pastry chefs in the United States certified by the American Culinary Federations.

The gala was designed to raise funds to buy children's books.

There's no trick to serving award-winning chicken. All it takes is a bird and a recipe booklet from the Delmarva Poultry Industry Inc. The leaflet features five winning recipes -- such as Lime Salsa Chicken and Buffalo Chicken Rolls -- from the 1994 Delmarva Chicken Cooking Contest. Pop-Tarts in a bowl

Fans of Kellogg's Pop-Tarts toaster pastries will be happy to know they can now get their favorite breakfast food in cereal form. Kellogg's Pop-Tarts Crunch will be available in two flavors: frosted strawberry and frosted brown sugar cinnamon. The cereal resembles tiny Pop-Tarts, but the "icing" is a crisp glaze and the center fruit is crunchy rather than soft -- the better to stand up to milk. A 3/4 -cup serving contains 1 gram of fat, no saturated fat, no cholesterol and 125 milligrams of sodium. Suggested retail price for the cereal is $3.49. Kellogg's has already begun shipping the cereal.
