The Baltimore Sun Co. said yesterday that it has appointed Robert T. O'Sullivan to the position of vice president and circulation director.

Mr. O'Sullivan, who previously was vice president and circulation director for Gannett Suburban Newspapers of White Plains, N.Y., will oversee circulation sales and growth, transportation, distribution, packaging and customer service in his new job.

He fills a position previously held by John Patinella, who was promoted in June to president and chief executive officer of The Baltimore Sun Community Newspapers.

Mr. O'Sullivan has "a strong marketing and customer orientation," said Mary Junck, publisher and chief executive officer of The Baltimore Sun Co.

Mr. O'Sullivan was circulation director for the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1984 to 1987 and for the Philadelphia Daily News from 1979 to 1984. His background also includes 18 years of plant management and circulation sales experience with the New York Daily News.

"I salute The Sun on its impressive circulation gains this year and am very pleased to be joining such a growth-oriented company," Mr. O'Sullivan said.
