Man, 23, is slain near officers

September 22, 1994

BALTIMORE -- A 23-year-old West Baltimore man was shot to death last night in an alley not far from where police officers were questioning a man about an unrelated incident.

Around 8:15 p.m., two Southwestern District officers were talking to a man in the alley behind the 1900 block of N. Longwood St. when they heard several gunshots coming from the other end of the alley.

Running to where the shots were fired, the officers found the victim, James Carter, of the 2500 block of Hollins St., lying on the pavement and bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds to the body and head. An ambulance crew pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police said a woman who lives nearby was standing outside her home when she was struck by a bullet. She was treated at a hospital and released. No arrest had been made in the man's death and police knew of no motive for the killing.
