Direct Marketing Associates' relocation cuts 250 Balto. jobs

Direct Marketing Associates Inc. intends to pull 250 jobs from the city when it relocates to the Halethorpe section of Baltimore County early next year.

The direct-mail firm has contracted to purchase a vacant 360,000-square-foot building previously occupied by the Maryland Paper Box Corp. for roughly $4 million, where it plans to relocate by early next year, said Terry Woods, a vice president and a company principal.

The purchase was made possible through a $6 million industrial development bond approved Monday by the Baltimore County Council. Direct Marketing hopes to hire about 150 new workers by the end of 1996, Mr. Woods said, bringing employment to about 400. Maryland Paper Box vacated the building at 4545 Annapolis Road in May 1993, after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Direct Marketing's new headquarters will replace its 100,000-square-foot facility at 1415 Russell St., where the $12 million company has operated since 1984. CB Commercial Real Estate Group represented Direct Marketing.
