A 30-year-old hitchhiker was critically injured when he was struck by an automobile in the Medford area early Tuesday.

Brian Keith Lee, whose address was not known, was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore by the state police MedEvac helicopter.

His condition yesterday was critical and unstable, a spokeswoman there said.

State police said Mr. Lee was walking along Stone Chapel Road at Old Medford Road, attempting to get a ride, when a 24-year-old man who lives in the 4400 block of Buffalo Road stopped to pick him up about 6:30 a.m.

Police said Kevin Dennis Mills, who was driving a 1984 Chevrolet Camaro west on Stone Chapel Road, saw the stopped vehicle and braked to avoid hitting it.

Mr. Mills' car skidded and struck the pedestrian, then hit a tree.

Mr. Mills, 20, of the 2200 block of Arrington Road in Marriottsville was taken to Carroll County General Hospital and released after treatment, a spokeswoman there said.

Tfc. Andrew G. Winner issued two traffic citations to Mr. Mills after the accident.
