Fallfest fun begins tomorrow

Among other things, the 18th annual Westminster Fallfest is looking for the best sow summoner in the county. That person will be chosen at Hahn's of Westminster's pig calling contest at 2 p.m. Saturday on the playground stage downtown.

"A little pig will be there to represent the contest," said Ron Schroers, director of Westminster's Department of Recreation. "Whoever 'sooees' the best and who sounds like a pig with the loudest hog call wins."

The winning caller will receive a gift pack from Hahn's, 7/8 7/8 TC meatpacking company. To register for the contest, call the recreation office at 848-6962.

Youngsters probably will be more interested in the lip-sync contest from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the Longwell stage. The first 50 contestants will get a free T-shirt from Super Giant. Registration is required. Applications are available from the city recreation office on Longwell Avenue or at the WTTR booth no later than 1 p.m. Saturday.

"The kids bring a tape. They can come in costume and do a whole little show," said Billie Coursey, contest coordinator. "They're judged on performance, technique, creativity, originality, appearance and audience appeal. It's a lot of fun."

The grand prize winner will get four free games a week for a year from the Dream Machine arcade and one monthly free rental from Blockbuster Video.

Pig-calling and lip-syncing are only two of many activities awaiting the thousands of visitors to the festival, which starts tomorrow at 6 p.m. with rides, games and food.

After the 7 p.m. parade tomorrow, disc jockey Jack Edwards will put on his oldies show. Games and rides will open at 6 p.m. Friday.

Saturday and Sunday will include a crafts show, Pennsylvania Dutch farmer's market, antique car displays, stage entertainment, train rides, bingo and concerts.

The EnterTRAINment Line will provide Fallfest rides at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, but watch out for the masked bandits robbing you for a local charity.

The Fallfest gives 10 Westminster High School students the chance to earn money for their favorite club by eating a Ma Baugher's blueberry pie Sunday afternoon.

"The first one to down a pie will take a $100 cash prize," Mr. Schroers said.

Proceeds from this annual event will go to the Carroll County Children's Fund, Change Inc., Human Services Programs, Carroll Hospice and the Northeast Social Action Program this year.

For a change of pace, anybody wishing to help set up Thursday or tear down after the festival ends is urged to call the city recreation office at 848-6962.
