2-mile walk will raise money for the hungry



"Help CROP Stop Hunger: Walk for the Hungry," a 2-mile walk to raise money for food and refugee relief supplies, will be held Oct. 2. The walk is sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance in Brooklyn-Curtis Bay in association with Church World Service.

The walk will begin and end at St. John Lutheran Church, 226 Washburn Ave. Registration begins at 1 p.m. in the social hall. The walk starts promptly at 1:30 p.m. and will take about 45 minutes to an hour. Everyone is invited to enjoy light refreshments at St. John's after the walk. Local churches participating in the walk include St. John Lutheran Church, St. Paul Lutheran Church, St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Brooklyn United Methodist Church, Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church.

Twenty-five percent of the money raised will be used to feed the hungry in our community. So, get your sponsors and put on your walking shoes.

Belle Grove Elementary School: The fall fund-raiser, "The World's Fair Collection," starts Friday. All money and orders will be collected Oct. 11. Children will be selling novelty items, candy, cheese and meat. The top male and female sellers in each class will get a chance to win a 5-pound Hershey's chocolate bar in a drawing. All proceeds will benefit the school through the PTA.

North County High School: The first home football game takes place at 7 p.m. Friday. Come out and cheer your team on!

The Band Parents meeting will be held in the band room at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The agenda will include election of officers, reviewing dates, signing up chaperons and discussing fund-raising projects. If you have a student who is a member of the band or would just like to get involved, plan to attend this meeting.


A turkey and ham dinner sponsored by the Witness Committee and Aid Association For Lutherans of St. John Lutheran Church takes place from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday in the church social hall, 226 Washburn Ave. Tickets are $7.50 for adults, $3.50 for children under age 6. They can be bought between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. today through Wednesday at the church office. Tickets will not be sold at the door, and food will not be sold for carryout.

The days of autumn will be upon us shortly. Be sure to reserve your seat on the bus to the Carroll County Farm Museum's "Autumn Glory Festival." This trip, sponsored by the Arundel Improvement Association Community Advocates for Senior Opportunities and Services, will take place Oct. 8. The bus will leave from the AIA hall, 705 Cross St., at 9:30 a.m. and return at 5:30 p.m. The $7.50 per person ticket includes bus fare and festival admission.

"Storytime" at the Brooklyn Park Library, 1 East 11th Ave., begins this week. Stories, fun and activities for children from 2 to 6 will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 26. Bring your children and enjoy the library.

Harbor Hospital Center will sponsor its annual golf outing Oct. 5 at the Turf Valley Country Club. Proceeds will benefit the hospital's new diabetes center. Registration will be from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Lunch and a shotgun start will follow.

Prizes will be awarded for the longest drive and the ball hit closest to the pin, as well as for a hole-in-one at designated holes. The individual entry fee is $200. Sponsorship levels are also available. Registration is limited to 144 golfers. The event will end with cocktails and an awards dinner.
