Field Hockey Preview

September 18, 1994|By Mark Hoeflich

Aberdeen Eagles

1993 record: 1-11. Coach: Sandy Levin.

Top players: Becky Baldwin, Sr., D; Melissa Bender, O, Sr.; Biena Berry, Sr., O; Sharon Fitzcharles, Soph., O; Jen Floran, Sr., O; Mary Ishibashi, Sr., O; Susan Schwartz, Sr., O; Megan Thompson, Sr., O.

Outlook: Nine senior returnees and a lot of players from the junior varsity give the Eagles a good chance to improve over last year. Levin has the Eagles in their best physical condition in quite some time, which figures to play a big part on a much stronger attack, where there is the most experience in Bender, Ishibashi and Schwartz. Levin will play three links to give better support to a defense that lacks depth.

Bel Air Bobcats

1993 record: 13-2-1. Coach: Phyllis Hemmes.

Top players: Joie Acosta, Sr., O; Carrie Carpenter, Sr., O; Kerry Kimsey, Sr., O; Beth MacFarlane, Sr., O; Karen Wagner, Sr., D; Amie Wang, Sr., O.

Outlook: The first few games this season against Glenelg, Centennial and Dulaney figure to decide a lot for the Bobcats, who are without a top scorer. After advancing to the state regional semifinals a year ago, Bel Air will rely on its defense this season, especially Wagner. An unselfish team with generally good speed, the Bobcats hope for a return trip to the regionals and considering Bel Air is usually a late bloomer chances are it will get there.

C. Milton Wright Mustangs

1993 record: 7-2. Coach: Carolyn Wright.

Top players: Dina DeBellis, Sr., O; Janine DeBellis, Sr., G; Katie Hykes, Sr., O; Tara Klimonitz, Sr., O; Carlye Milore, Jr., O; Christie Schwartz, Jr., D; Karen Tamel, Sr., O; Shannon Terry, Sr., D.

Outlook: The Mustangs bring back a solid core of players who should keep them in the thick of the county race. First-year coach Wright has a lot of skill to work with and it is just a matter of improving the passing game. There are several capable scorers but the defense looks the strongest, anchored by Schwartz, who has excellent stick work, and Terry, who is good at getting the ball cleared.

Edgewood Rams

1993 record: 5-7. Coach: Michele McGinley.

Top players: Laura Bates, Sr., D; Juliano Betro, Sr., D; Kelly Dyson, Jr., O; Shannon Michaloski, Sr., D; Amy Nemec, Sr., O; Lori Nemec, Sr., O; Mona Patel, Sr., O; Amy Price, Sr., G; Amie Schoolcraft, Jr., O.

Outlook: Edgewood again faces a rebuilding season. The Rams have just 12 players, seven of whom are seniors, yet the stickwork fundamentals are missing. First-year coach McGinley hopes for at least a .500 season and the defense will decide much of that with the most experience on the back line. The Rams will need to score more, however, and McGinley has been concentrating on a more aggressive attack.

Fallston Cougars

1993 record: 14-0-2. Coach: Alice Puckett.

Top players: Carrie Grable, Jr., M; Lauren Grabowski, Sr., A; Julie Haire, Sr., D; Rachel Simon, Jr., M; Katie Wirth, Jr., D.

Outlook: Even with the loss of last season's two top scorers, the defending Class 2A state champions are in the best position to win the county title. A defense that gave up just two goals last season, comes back strong, with Haire -- All-County, second-team All-Metro a year ago -- as the mainstay at sweeper. The hole to fill is at goalkeeper, where as many as three players vie for the job. Fallston might have to work a little harder to score and the links will be looked to to help out, yet there are no real

concerns with several capable scorers. A team that is confident for a repeat, the Cougars play games against Hammond, Wilde Lake, Francis Scott Key and Rising Sun to keep them prepared for the postseason.

Harford Christian

1993 record: 4-7. Coach: Cathy Reese.

Top players: Suzanne Akers, Sr., A; Esther Evans, Sr., M; Capri Ingram, Sr., A; Jen Lowenstein, Sr., D; Jettie Moir, Sr., M; Jodi Spicer, Sr., M; Erin Urlahs, Sr., A.

Outlook: This senior-laden team comes back nearly intact from a year ago. The only thing missing is a goalkeeper. Seven seniors are on the squad -- many have been together

for five years -- which makes Harford Christian strong at both ends of the field. Akers was last season's leader in goals scored and there are other capable scorers. Several newcomers figure to keep this program strong.

Havre de Grace Warriors

1993 record: 3-7. Coach: Judy Forder.

Top players: Jayme Baker, Sr., M; Heidi Dobson, Sr., M; Renee Grainger, Jr., O; Jen Hager, Soph., O; Kristen Kim, Jr., O-D; Carrie McCone, Jr., M; Trisha Oals, Sr., O; Jen Supik, Sr., D; Chai Turner, Sr., D.

Outlook: The program for the Warriors has been slowly coming together and this season might be their best opportunity for at least a .500 record. As many as 10 players return and the Warriors look to limit scoring with two four-year starters back on defense -- Supik and Turner. Grainger, Hager and Oals make for a more aggressive front line.

John Carroll Patriots

1993 record: 2-8-1. Coach: Tess Gauthier.
