Unranked Severn upsets No. 14 Southern-AA, 14-0

John Vereen carried 22 times for 82 yards and a touchdown to lead visiting Severn (2-0) to a 14-0 upset victory over No. 14

Southern of Anne Arundel County last night.

Southern-AA (1-1) committed eight turnovers. Bulldogs running back Bobby Procopio rushed for 103 yards on 22 carries before leaving in the fourth quarter with an injury.

Poly 42, Southwestern 0

Randy Beaman rushed for 108 yards and had an 80-yard punt return for a touchdown as visiting and No. 2 Poly (2-0) downed Southwestern (0-2).

City 14, Carver 9

Taber Small had 24 carries for 135 yards and Shannon Cole returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown for visiting and No. 7 City (2-0). Carver dropped to 0-2.

Lake Clifton 16, Mervo 0

Tailback Kenny Williams rushed 10 times for 202 yards and one touchdown to lead No. 8 Lake Clifton (2-0) past host Mervo (0-2). Williams who scored both two-point conversions for the Lakers, had 265 yards in total offense. Lakers quarterback Greate White was 11-for-23 for 173 yards and one touchdown.

St. Mary's 10, South River 9

Pete Grimm's 18-yard field goal with 2:30 remaining lifted No. 11 St. Mary's (2-0) over visiting South River (0-2). Jason Lilly rushed for 148 yards for the Saints.

St. Mary's led 7-0 after Brad Davis threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Zack Burke. South River tied the score on a 80-yard touchdown pass from Phil Taman to Russell Tongue, then got a safety to lead, 9-7 at halftime.

Calvert Hall 14, Old Mill 10

Nick Muro threw a 10-yard touchdown pass with 53 seconds to play to give No. 12 Calvert Hall (2-0) a victory over Old Mill (0-1).

The Patriots led 10-3 on Chuck Manns' 9-yard touchdown pass to Josh Hines with 3:53 to play in the third quarter.

Glen Burnie 26, Broadneck 14

Jay Sponaugle rushed for 158 yards and scored four touchdowns for host Glen Burnie (1-1). Joe Queen had 14 rushes for a 101 yards for Glen Burnie.

Mt. St. Joe 48, Paul VI 8

Juvon Norris rushed 14 times for 212 yards and four touchdowns to pace visiting Mount St. Joseph (2-0). Archie Wannamaker had 12 carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Lucas Phillips went 9-for-16 for a 118 yards and one touchdown.

Edmondson 14, Southern-B 6

Running back David Merritt scored on a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter to give Edmondson coach Pete Pompey his first win since his return to the West Baltimore school, where he coached for 15 years before moving to Dunbar in 1986.

Corey Brown tied the game on a 5-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter for the Redskins, who won for the first time in 12 games dating back to last season. Southern dropped to 0-2.

Forest Pk. 24, Northwestern 18

Aaron Thompson had 25 carries for 160 yards and scored three touchdowns, leading Forest Park (2-0) past host Northwestern (0-2).

Donald Campbell rushed for two touchdowns and 105 yards in total offense to lead the Friars (2-0) over visiting Owings Mills (1-1).

Gibbons 39, Eastern Tech 0

George Blythe threw for three touchdowns and Corey Butts scored twice, leading visiting Cardinal Gibbons (1-0) past Eastern Tech (0-2).

Northern 46, Douglass 0

Willie Brown had 160 yards in total offense to lead visiting Northern (1-1) past Douglass (0-2). Linebacker Mike Wilson had seven tackles and two sacks for the Vikings.

St. Paul's 14, Northeast-AA 12

Tucker Radebaugh had 17 carries for 181 yards and ran for two touchdowns, leading St. Paul 's (2-0) over visiting Northeast (0-2). Junior fullback Scott Kim rushed two times for 10 yards and had 20 tackles. Tyrone Eaton scored on runs of 2 and 5 yards for Northeast.

Bel Air 19, Joppatowne 14

Chris Siplin rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown, leading Bel Air (2-0) past visiting Joppatowne (1-1).

Hereford 14, Mount Hebron 0

Jack Bahen ran for 88 yards and Roy Collins ran for 75 as Hereford (1-1) had 215 yards rushing in defeating visiting Mount Hebron (0-2).

John Carroll 12, Spalding 7

Larry Cyr carried 14 times for 73 yards and one touchdown to lead visiting John Carroll (1-1) past Spalding (1-2). Spalding was held to 71 yards in the second half.

Franklin 34, Chesapeake-BC 6

Antoine Bates had five carries for 72 yards and one touchdown as host Franklin (2-0) beat Chesapeake-BC (0-2).

Pikesville 28, Lansdowne 12

Alzono Boldon rushed 10 times for 61 yards and one touchdown to lead Pikesville past host Landsdowne. Bruce Jones added two touchdowns for Pikesville.

Arundel 24, Queen's Anne 7

Casey Trout had 230 yards in total offense and four touchdown to lead visiting Arundel (2-0) past Queen's Anne (0-2).

Friends 28, Western Tech 6

Ryan Goldbloom rushed for one touchdown and recovered a fumble in the end zone to lead host Friends past Western Tech in both teams' season opener. Tailback Patrick Nyang'ani rushed for a touchdown.
