Flynn named St. Mary's coach

Bob Flynn, who spent 10 years as an assistant coach under Jim Phelan at Mount St. Mary's, has been named men's basketball coach at St. Mary's College.

"St. Mary's is a great place academically, and I think that athletically we can do very well," said Flynn, who replaces Bob Valvano. "I've learned from one of the best."

As Phelan's assistant, Flynn helped the Mountaineers win 169 games over his 10-year tenure. Over those 10 years, Mount St. Mary's went to the Division II Final Four and three consecutive trips to the Division II South Atlantic Regionals.

* LOYOLA: Bill Wnek, a senior forward who contributed four goals and one assist in four soccer victories, was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Men's soccer

* Charles CC 4, Dundalk CC 0: Jason Ramsey had two goals and an assist to lead host Charles Community College over Dundalk Community College.

Women's soccer

* UMBC 1, Liberty 0: Freshman fullback Renny Trellis (Wilde Lake) headed in a cross from sophomore Laura Dvorak to break a scoreless tie and lift host UMBC (2-1) over Liberty (1-3) in the Big South Conference.

* Bucknell 4, Mount St. Mary's 0: Bucknell scored three times in the final 15 minutes of the first half in beating host Mount St. Mary's.

Field hockey

* Salisbury State 7, Catholic 0: Kim Bloodsworth and Sue Fatz led host Salisbury State (1-1) with three goals each in the shutout of Catholic (1-1).
