It's hard to think of winter sports when temperatures are in the high 70s and low 80s. But the Crofton Athletic Council has scheduled registration sessions for its winter sports program.

Each registration session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Walk-in registrations will be held Sept. 17 and Sept. 24 at Cardinal Field off Underwood Road. A third registration will be held Oct. 1 on the football field at Crofton Park.

Fall sports are basketball, basketball cheerleading and wrestling. Each costs $30. Fees for these sports will increase to $40 after Oct. 30. All participants must have a Chaperon Commitment Agreement signed by a parent or guardian to register. They will not be allowed to play if the agreement is not signed.

A pumpkin-carving contest and bonfire will add a new twist to this year's lead-up to Halloween in Crofton. The event will be held Oct. 22 at Hardy Field next to Crofton Elementary School on Duke of Kent Drive. It will be sponsored by the Recreation and Youth Committee of the Crofton Civic Association. Apple cider, hot chocolate and other refreshments will be available.

Did you know the Crofton special tax district has been named a World War II Commemorative Community by the U.S. secretary of defense? The designation came about in part because of the newly dedicated portion of median strip for World War II veterans on Crofton Parkway near Eton Way.

When you drive by the grove of trees you can still see red, white and blue ribbons on each tree. Crofton was also recognized for events the Civic Association sponsors, such as the annual Armed Forces Day parade.

The Crofton Civic Association, the Crofton Country Club and the Anne Arundel Medical Center are joining together to hold separate health symposiums in October for men and women.

The women's symposium, "Women's Health Issues-Myths and Realities," is set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 22 at the Crofton Country Club. The men's symposium, "Critical Issues in a Man's Life," is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Crofton Country Club. Both events are free and open to the public.

It's that time of year again, time for the annual Crofton Arts and Crafts Fair. The fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Crofton Village Green on Crofton Parkway.

The yearly event is sponsored by the Crofton Federated Women's Club and features crafts from around the region. The annual Boy Scouts' chicken sale will be going on the same time as the fair. If you've ever been to the fair before, you know the savory smell of cooked chicken is enough to make a person's mouth water. So, don't forget to get your tickets from your neighborhood Boy Scout.

The Greater Crofton Chamber of Commerce general membership luncheon will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Crofton Country Club. Michael Dillow and Reggie Saunders from the Redskins organization will discuss the impact the proposed NFL stadium will have on Crofton and Anne Arundel County. The session costs $18 for chamber members, $22 for nonmembers. When making your reservations you will need to give your preference for either grilled salmon or chicken piccata.

For more information or to make your reservations, call Sheila Schneider at 721-9131.
