Cause of infant's death unknown after autopsy

An autopsy performed on a 5-month-old Hampden boy found dead in his parents' car Saturday failed to determine the cause of death, a city police spokesman said yesterday.

City homicide detectives are calling the circumstances surrounding the infant's death suspicious, but say no signs of foul play were apparent, said Sam Ringgold, the spokesman.

Jeremy Schaffer was pronounced dead about 3:30 p.m., shortly after paramedics arrived at a relative's house in the 1400 block of Weldon Place, Mr. Ringgold said.

The baby's parents, April M. Schaffer, 21, and Stephen T. Johnston, 24, of the 400 block of W. 28th Street drove to Ms. Schaffer's aunt's home on Weldon Place with their son and parked outside. They called police after discovering their baby was apparently dead, police said. Paramedics attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation for about 15 minutes, but could not revive the child, Mr. Ringgold said.
