Shields scores 4 goals, leads Loyola, 8-0

Sophomore forward Tim Shields scored a career-high four goals to lead No. 19 Loyola to an 8-0 victory over Iona in the first round of the Loyola Budweiser men's soccer tournament. Shields' output was one shy of the school single-game record set in 1961.

Senior goalkeeper Zach Thornton posted his 18th career shutout.

* UMBC 1, Howard 0: Rob Hoch scored with 3:56 remaining in the second overtime as UMBC (2-1) overcame Howard (1-2) at UMBC Stadium. Hoch has game-winning goals in both Retrievers wins. The victory extended UMBC's home win streak to 13.

* Towson State 1, Oneonta (N.Y.) 0: Steve Groves scored in the second overtime to give Towson State a victory over Oneonta in the semifinals of the Mayor's Cup Tournament. The Tigers' Mike Stillman gained his second shutout of the season.

* Goucher 5, Holy Family 1: Junior forward Chris Walton (Mount St. Joseph) scored three goals as Goucher (2-2) defeated visiting Holy Family (1-2). Sophomore goalie Ethan Roberts made 14 saves.

* Johns Hopkins 2, North Carolina Wesleyan 1: David Morrow scored with 18 minutes left in the first half as Johns Hopkins (2-0) topped North Carolina Wesleyan (1-2) in the first round of the Howard Johnson Tournament in Rocky Mount, N.C.

* Muhlenberg 2, Washington College 1: Eric Ervin and Joshua Winneker scored goals in the second half, helping visiting Muhlenberg (3-0) past Washington College (1-1). Kevin Meyers FTC scored Washington College's lone goal.

* Salisbury State 5, Marymount 0: Shawn Collins, Matt Gaines, Matt Tirschman (Overlea), Ousman Auber, David Hansen each scored as Salisbury State (1-0) defeated visiting Marymount (0-3) in the first round of the First Shore Federal Bank Tournament.

* Catonsville CC 2, Chesapeake College 0: Ricky Sanchez and Troy Hoskins each scored to lead host Catonsville Community ** College (1-0) past Chesapeake College. Ryan Beaumont (Cardinal Gibbons) had five saves for the shutout.

* Essex CC 9, Hagerstown CC 1: Mike Lance scored three goals and Paul Neske and Gilbert Negen each had two as host Essex Community College (2-0) defeated Hagerstown Community College. Luke Bell and Mark Fisher also scored for Essex, and Keith Muir had three assists.

Women's soccer

* Haverford 4, Johns Hopkins 1: Amanda Solter scored two goals and Catherine Cornell and Aurore DeCarlo each had one, leading host Haverford (1-0) past Johns Hopkins (0-1). Liz McDonough had six saves for Haverford. Kerrie Cathcart scored Johns Hopkins' goal.

* Goucher 3, Cabrini 1: April Simonsen (Patapsco) contributed a goal and an assist as Goucher (4-0) downed visiting Cabrini (1-0).

* Salisbury State 3, Western Maryland 0: Vicki Prince scored two goals and Nicki Urban had one as Salisbury State (1-0) won its first women's varsity soccer game, defeating Western Maryland (1-1).

Field hockey

* Iowa 2, Maryland 1: Iowa scored twice in the first half and outshot Maryland 15-9 as the Hawkeyes defeated the No. 3 Terps in Charlottesville, Va. Laura Harmon scored with six minutes to cut the lead to one.

* Goucher 4, Drew 3: Michele Mohlman scored 53 seconds into overtime as Goucher (3-0) edged Drew (1-2) in the title game of the Drew University tournament.
