Friends of Wanda Hurt holding ice cream social

The Friends of Wanda Hurt will sponsor a Have a Scoop on Wanda Hurt ice cream social today at the Lake Elkhorn Pavilion in Columbia.

The free event is open to the public. Wanda Hurt is a candidate for the House of Delegates, District 13A. For more information, call Dennis D'Adamo at 740-4946.

She received the endorsements of the Fifth Democratic Club and the Clean Water Action-Vote Environment, in addition to the Baltimore Sun, the Howard County Business and Commerce PAC, the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters and the Ellicott City Democratic Club.

County business PAC announces endorsements

The Howard County Business and Commerce Political Action Committee has announced its endorsements for the Sept. 13 primary.

The following candidates were chosen:

State Senate: Edward J. Kasemeyer (D), District 12; Virginia M. Thomas (D), Martin G. Madden (R), District 13; James Mundy (D), Christopher McCabe (R), District 14.

House of Delegates: Louis Morseburger (D) and Kenneth Masters (D), District 12A; Rosemary Mortimer (D), District 12B; Pearl Atkinson-Stewart (D) and Wanda Hurt (D), District 13A; Joseph Robison (D), District 13B and Robert Flanagan (R), Robert Kittleman (R), District 14B.

County Executive: Charles I. Ecker (R).

County Council: Darrel Drown (R), District 1; C. Vernon Gray (D), Evelyn Tanner (R), District 2; Charles Acquard (D), Dennis Schrader (R), District 3; Mary Lorsung (D), Maryanne Wilkinson (R), District 4; and Charles C. Feaga, (R), District 5.

School Board: Delroy Cornick, Jamie Kendrick and Robert Mineheart.

State's Attorney: Dario Broccolini (D) and Marna McLendon (R).

Clerk of the Court: Margaret Rappaport (R).

Mundy endorsed by police group

Jim Mundy, a candidate for state Senate District 14, was endorsed by the Howard County Police Officer Association. His other endorsements include the Maryland State Fraternal Order of Police, the Montgomery County Firefighters Association and the Montgomery County Journal.

He has been endorsed by 22 organizations, including the Howard County Business and Commerce Political Action Committee.

Clean Water Action endorses Andy Levy

Andy Levy, candidate for the House of Delegates, District 14B, has been endorsed by Clean Water Action. Mr. Levy is seeking one of two at-large seats in the 14B delegates race. He has also been endorsed by the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police, the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters, the Columbia Democratic Club, the Fifth District Democratic Club, the Ellicott City Democratic Club and The Sun.

Free Congress drops Aron endorsement

The Free Congress Political Action Committee has dropped its endorsement of Montgomery County lawyer and developer Ruthann Aron, citing "Ruthann's flip-flops on a litany of issues."

The Free Congress PAC has endorsed state Del. C. Ronald Franks, the only Republican senatorial candidate with Maryland legislative experience.

Paul Weyrich, national chairman of Free Congress PAC and a longtime conservative activist, said that Delegate Franks' "steadfast opposition to gun control and increased taxes, and his commitment to reducing the size of government are clearly documented in his legislative record."

Conservationists endorse Turner

Frank S. Turner, a candidate for the House of Delegates in District 13A, recently received the endorsements of the Baltimore Sun, the Afro-American, the Maryland League of Conservation Voters, Maryland Fraternal Order of Police, the Maryland Classified Employees Association and Clean Water Action.

Clean Water Action endorses Yeager

Clean Water Action has endorsed Thomas M. Yeager in his bid for re-election to the Maryland Senate, District 13.

In its endorsement, the organization cited Mr. Yeager for his depth of concern for environmental issues and his interest in making these issues a priority in his campaign in Annapolis.

NOW, NARAL endorse Michael Dupuy

Socially Responsible Investing has endorsed Michael Dupuy in his bid for Maryland State Senate District 14.

Mr. Dupuy has also been endorsed by the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League of Maryland and the Montgomery County Chapter of the National Organization for Women.

Municipal workers endorse Rush

Teresa M. Rush, a Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates in District 14B, has been endorsed by the following organizations:

The Howard County Public Employees, Local 3085; Howard County School Board Employees, Local 1899; Howard County Detention Center Employees, Local 3080; Maryland State AFL-CIO; AFSCME Maryland Public Employees Council 67 and the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League.

Groups to sponsor candidates forum Oct. 8

A candidates forum will be sponsored by 14 organizations, including the Howard County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the League of Women Voters, the National Council of Jewish Women and the Howard County Bar Association, on Oct. 8 at Smith Auditorium, Howard Community College in Columbia.

The introduction will be from 9 a.m. to 9:10 a.m.; school board candidates from 9:10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.; county executive, 10:20 a.m. to 11 a.m.; County Council, 11:05 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; House of Delegates, 1:15 p.m. to 2:25 p.m.; state Senate, 2:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.; and state's attorney, 3:25 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Parking will be free.

Flapjack Fest set by Senator McCabe

The family and friends of state Sen. Christopher J. McCabe will hold their fourth annual Fall Flapjack Fest from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Howard County School of Technology, 10920 Route 108 in Ellicott City. Featured will be a silent auction, Redskins ticket raffle, pumpkins for sale and brunch. Tickets are $10 for adults, $3 for children ages 5 to 14. Children under 5 eat free. Information: 531-2870.
