Joseph W. Burcham


Joseph W. Burcham, retired chief architect for the Social Security Administration, died Monday of congestive heart failure a hospital in Cape Coral, Fla. He was 84 and had moved to Florida from Catonsville after retiring in 1976.

A Mass of Christian burial was to be offered at 10 a.m. today at St. Philip the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Camp Springs.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Louise Hardesty; four sisters, Mabel Newman of Elkin, Lorene Cox of Mooresville, N.C., Ruby Sharpe of Alexandria, Va., and Kathleen Land of Fort Washington; and three brothers, Robert P. Burcham of Alexandria, Va., James S. Burcham of Davidsonville and John B. Burcham Jr. of Germantown.

Ann Wendt, retired senior assistant editor and director of research for National Geographic magazine, died Wednesday of cancer at her home in Bethesda. The Baltimore native was 72.

Services were set for 11 a.m. today at Joseph Gawler's & Sons Inc., Washington. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Erwin W. Wendt; and two brothers, Robert C. Kanode of Reisterstown and Richard W. Kanode of Frederick.
