Mason wins MAGA Women's Amateur

BETHANY BEACH, Del. -- Jane Mason chalked up another milestone in what continues to be a distinguished long-running golf career yesterday when she won the annual Middle Atlantic Golf Association Women's Amateur championship for the fifth time at Cripple Creek Golf & Country Club.

This time, the Eastern Shore native who lives in Fruitland coaxed home a four-foot birdie putt on the 18th green to edge another former champion, Shelley Savage of Arlington, Va., by a stroke.

Each shot 6-over-par 78s, with Mason finishing at 152, and Savage, who let a two-shot lead get away when she four-putted No. 17, 153.

Joan Winchester of Baltimore, who has won practically every area title available to her but this one, closed with a 75 and finished third, 155. Her round included an eagle at the par-4 17th, where her 110-yard 9-iron shot rolled into the cup.

It turned out to be a roller-coaster ride for the winner, whose titles have come in four different decades, and for Savage, the 1991 champion.

Mason, whose opening-round 74 was recognized as a women's competitive course record, started the day one stroke ahead in the 76-player field, but after the two exchanged the lead, Mason gave it up for the last time with a double-bogey six at the ninth hole.
