Calling all Shannen Doherty fans

TODAY'S TV

September 09, 1994|By David Bianculli | David Bianculli,Special to The Sun

Two days ago, Shannen Doherty was missing from "Beverly Hills, 90210," but tonight she makes a roaring comeback as a good girl gone bad, and on the lam, in "Jailbreakers," Showtime's newest neo-retro "Rebel Highway" made-for-tv movie. Otherwise, the night is dominated by the three Rs: reruns, reruns, reruns.

* "M.A.N.T.I.S." (8 p.m.-9 p.m., Channel 45) -- Perhaps it's time to start praying, "M.A.N.T.I.S." the first episode, which premiered two weeks ago, earned a 14 share of the available audience and was third in its time slot. Last week, though, the second episode slipped to a 12 share, and was fourth in its time slot. The race

isn't over yet -- but once the other three networks start showing first-run programming, it looks like it'll be over pretty quickly, at least for this show. Fox.

* "ABC Saturday Morning Preview Special" (8:30 p.m.-9 p.m., Channel 13) -- This special isn't recommended so much as a program you shouldn't miss, but as a handy consumer guide to help decide which of the network's new Saturday-morning shows your kids should miss. One to watch for on the positive side is "Reboot," a computer-animated show that would be terrific if its scripts were one-tenth as imaginative as its visuals. Other shows sampled include a new animated version of "Free Willy." ABC.

* "Step by Step" (9 p.m.-9:30 p.m., Channel 13) -- When sitcoms get bored with their own characters and story lines, they invent episodes such as this repeat, where everyone gets to play dress-up by enacting a "film noir" creative-writing story by Cody (Sasha Mitchell). If the writing on this series were more creative to begin with, this sort of thing wouldn't be necessary. Suzanne Somers, Patrick Duffy star. ABC.

* "The X-Files" (9 p.m.-10 p.m., Channel 45) -- To set up next week's season opener, "The X-Files" tonight repeats the first-season cliffhanger, in which Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson) get closer to extraterrestrials. Very spooky; very nice. Fox.

Cable

* "Rebel Highway: Jailbreakers" (10:05 p.m.-11:25 p.m., SHO) -- Shannen Doherty falls in love with a leather-clad rebel on a bike, but this time it's not Luke Perry's Dylan. This time the rebel without much of a cause is played by Antonio Sabato Jr., who is behind bars -- but not for long, thanks to his aiding, abetting and a' bedding girlfriend.
