'Historic' Dining Room

TABLE TALK

September 09, 1994|By Elizabeth Large

When Bon Appetit picked seven "historic" American restaurants for its September issue, the magazine's choice for Baltimore was a surprise: Not Maison Marconi or Haussner's or the Milton Inn, but the Ambassador Dining Room. "Baltimore's secret is the Ambassador . . . " writes critic Lorna Williams. "It's a delightful place that has pulled off the trick of changing while staying the same."

* Look for a new Russian restaurant to open up next month in Sutton Place, in the spot where Moscow Nights used to be. Astoria, named after the elegant hotel in Moscow, will serve Russian, American and Continental food; its specialty will be Russian-style banquets. Live Russian music will be featured on the weekends.

* Most people probably didn't realize that the popular Little Italy restaurant Denittis' changed hands almost a year ago. The name didn't change, and the menu stayed much the same except for some sauces that were family recipes. But as soon as the new sign comes in, the restaurant will sport the name Paninos, which means "little breads" in Italian.

* Richard Wong, owner of the French/Asian Orchid Restaurant, has opened the Thai Noodle Bowl on the second level of Harborplace's Light Street Pavilion. It's an unusual concept: The customer creates his or her own dish by mixing and matching Thai noodles or rice, toppings and sauces.

* Foster's Restaurant and Wine Bar in Fells Point is planning three wine tastings Tuesday nights in September from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.: Sept. 13 will feature Washington state wines; Sept. 20, Chilean wines; and Sept. 27, wines from Llano Estacado winery in Texas. Cost is $7.50 for from five to seven wines.
