Orioles hire Gutowski to succeed Accorsi

The shuffling continues at Camden Yards. Only this time, the Orioles are hiring as well as firing.

The latest addition to the club's front office is Walt Gutowski, whose resume includes stints with the Maryland Stadium Authority and the Baltimore Skipjacks, and the distinction of being the last public relations director of the Baltimore Colts. Gutowski began work this week as Orioles director of business affairs.

Gutowski, 36, replaces Ernie Accorsi, who left the Orioles in July to join the New York Giants. Like Accorsi, Gutowski will oversee the club's public affairs and marketing departments. Accorsi also had responsibility for stadium operations at Camden Yards.

Gutowksi's hiring aside, the Orioles have been busy trimming their office staff, mostly in response to the 4-week-old players strike. Three part-time grounds crew workers were laid off this week, said Joe Foss, Orioles vice chairman of business. They joined 14 part-timers who lost their jobs a week ago.

Gutowski, a Baltimore native, had been working for the past three months as a private sports consultant, helping the Bowie Baysox in the move to their new stadium in Prince George's County. Before that, he spent three years as NFL coordinator for the Maryland Stadium Authority and, before that, worked in the front office of the Skipjacks, when the defunct minor-league hockey team played in Baltimore.
