Rush end Payton puzzled by former team's offense

Elfrid Payton, the erstwhile Shreveport Pirate, could hardly hide his disdain this week for Forrest Gregg, the man who cut him.

When Gregg turned the Pirates' offense over to two raw recruits, Payton, now a Baltimore rush end, had this to say of the situation:

"Awful. How could you bring in someone for a week or two weeks and start them? They don't know the system. We should have no problem."

Payton doesn't know Robert Hall and Robert Cobb, Shreveport's two new quarterbacks, but he figures he will by the end of tonight's game. Hall will start, but Gregg said Cobb also will play.

A native of Gretna, La., and a resident of New Orleans, Payton returns home with revenge on his mind.

Asked if he would say anything to Gregg, Payton said: "I have nothing to tell him. I'll do what I've got to do on the field.

"I'll probably be more emotional. But I'll do what's in the team concept, and everything should fall in place."

He did say he blamed team president Lonie Glieberman as much Gregg for his ouster three weeks ago.

"Forrest had a lot of input, but he [Glieberman] should have said 'No,' " Payton said. "I fault Lonie for allowing it to happen."

Going home II

Payton isn't the only Baltimore player going home. Cornerback Karl Anthony will have some 30 friends and relatives from Lafayette and New Iberia, La., at the game.

He said he never considered signing with the Pirates as a free agent because of the reputation of owner Bernie Glieberman. And he said he won't try to do anything special for the home folks.

"I have to focus on what I have to do," Anthony said. "If we go out and do what we're capable of doing, no way they can beat us."

Lineup shuffle

The CFLs will have five changes in the starting lineup tonight, four on offense. Reggie Perry replaces Shawn Beals (hamstring) at slotback, Nick Subis moves in at center, and John and Guy Earle move in at the guards. Scott Miller replaces Jearld Baylis (biceps) at defensive tackle.

Added to the roster are wide receiver Mike Alexander, rush end Mike Kerr and defensive tackle Malcolm Showell.

Baylis, Beals and guard Keith Ballard go to the injured list, and linebacker Earnest Fields was demoted to the practice roster.
