COLLEGE PARK -- Debbie Yow, who today officially begins her job as athletic director at the University of Maryland, has made her first personnel move by bringing in one of her former senior staff members from Saint Louis University.

Yow confirmed last night that Jamie Pollard, 30, will join the athletic department staff at Maryland as assistant athletic director for internal operations. Pollard had been an associate director at Saint Louis and the school's acting athletic director since Yow was hired at Maryland on Aug. 15.

Pollard, a former NCAA champion in the 5,000 meters at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, is a certified public accountant who previously served as business manager at Saint Louis University. Yow said he will work with assistant athletic director Dwight Williams and senior associate athletic director Sue Tyler, particularly in the area of cost containment.

"He'll help us stop the bleeding financially," Yow said, alluding to the department's $6.7 million debt. "He'll wind up saving us a lot more money than it costs to hire him. He's a total team player."
