2 escape fire in house near Taneytown

September 01, 1994

Two people escaped injury when fire erupted in their one-story, wood-frame house shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday, according to the state fire marshal's office.

Units from Taneytown, Harney and Littlestown and Kingsdale of Adams County, Pa., responded to the alarm in the 4800 block of Ruggles Road near Taneytown. They discovered a fire in a closet.

Jamie E. Smith, 19, who lives in the house with his 66-year-old grandmother, told fire investigators he was awakened by the odor of smoke. He said he ran into Mary E. Smith's bedroom to help her get out of the house, then returned to call 911.

The blaze was brought under control within 10 minutes by the 25 firefighters, but they remained on the scene for almost four hours checking for possible extension of the fire within the walls.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire, which caused about $1,200 damage, according to the state fire marshal's office.
