Man charged in shooting

A 21-year-old Annapolis man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder in the shooting of an Arnold carpenter in the face during an argument early yesterday, city police said.

The carpenter, Courtney Fargher, 26, of the 600 block Oakland Hill Drive, was in good condition at Anne Arundel Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said.

Carlos J. Wallace of the 1200 block of Crow's Nest Court was being held in the shooting. Police said the incident occurred about 1:40 a.m. near Clay and Rideout streets, as Mr. Fargher and another man rode in a pickup truck.

Police said the shooting resulted from a drug deal gone bad.

Mayor designates general cleanup time

Annapolis Mayor Alfred A. Hopkins has designated tomorrow through Sunday as Community Pride Clean-Up Weekend.

Mr. Hopkins is asking neighborhood associations, businesses and citizens to clean up their land, buildings and houses. Several groups already have pledged to help, including the Ward One Residents Association, the Naval Academy Midshipmen's Activity Group, the Annapolis Business Coalition and the Maryland Avenue/State Circle Association.

The city's Department of Public Works will use a steam cleaning system tomorrow to spruce up the City Dock.
