Democratic Club lists endorsements

The Ellicott City Democratic Club has endorsed these candidates in the primary:

U.S. senator -- Paul S. Sarbanes.

U.S. Representative, District 3 -- Benjamin L. Cardin.

U.S. Representative, District 6 -- Stephen Crawford.

Governor and lieutenant governor -- Parris Glendening and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.

State comptroller -- Louis L. Goldstein.

State senator, District 13 -- Edward J. Kasemeyer.

State senator, District 13 -- Virginia M. Thomas.

State senator, District 14 -- James Mundy.

House of Delegates, District 12B -- Elizabeth Bobo.

House of Delegates, District 13A -- Wanda Hurt.

House of Delegates, District 14B -- Andrew Levy and Carolyn Willis.

Howard County Executive -- Sue-Ellen Hantman.

County Council, District 1 -- George Layman.

County Council, District 2 -- Kathryn Mann.

County Council, District 5 -- John Taylor.

County state's attorney -- Michael Weal.

Clerk of the Circuit Court -- Leslie Cale.

Business PAC backs Wanda Hurt

Wanda Hurt, candidate for the House of Delegates, District 13A, has received the endorsement of the Business and Commerce Political Action Committee.

Commerce group supports Jim Mundy

James Mundy, candidate for state Senate, District 14, has been endorsed by the Howard County Commerce and Political Action Committee.

Police organization backs Andrew Levy

Andrew Levy, Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates, District 14B, has been endorsed by the Maryland State Lodge of Fraternal Order of Police.

The Maryland FOP represents more than 13,000 men and women in law enforcement who are members of state, county, federal and municipal police agencies.

Mr. Levy is seeking one of two at-large seats in the 14B race. He also has been endorsed by the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters, the Columbia Democratic Club, the 5th District Democratic Club and The Sun.

Business PAC supports Thomas

The Howard County Business and Commerce Political Action Committee is endorsing Virginia M. Thomas for state Senate in District 13 Democratic primary.

Delegate Thomas also has been honored as the Conservationist of the Year by the Audubon Society of Central Maryland. She is a recipient of the Public Service Award from the Laurel Medical Association, the Legislative Award from the Maryland Affiliate of the American Heart Association, the Mary Richmond Award from the Maryland Social Work Coalition and several other similar honors.

Sierra Club chapter lists endorsements

The Sierra Club, Howard County Group, along with the state chapter recently made endorsements of candidates for the state legislature in Districts 12, 13 and 14.

After preliminary screenings, the committee members interviewed 16 candidates and made recommendations for five of the eight seats:

House of Delegates, District 12B -- Elizabeth Bobo, Democrat.

House of Delegates, District 13A, Wanda Hurt, Democrat.

State Senate District 13 -- Thomas M. Yeager, Democrat.

House of Delegates, District 14B, Robert Flanagan, Republican and Andrew Levy, Democrat.

Democrats to hold Labor Day picnic

The Howard County Democratic Central Committee will hold its annual Labor Day picnic from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at Cedar Lane West, off Route 108.

The cost of $5 per person or $8 per couple includes food.

Friends of Willis plan celebration

The Friends of Casey Willis will sponsor a celebration from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sept. 9 at the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City.

Carolyn "Casey" Willis is a Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates in District 14.

Music will be provided by Opus I. Tickets are $50.

AARP to hold candidate forum

The American Association of Retired Persons Howard County will meet at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Florence Bain Senior Center.

The meeting will feature candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
