Georgia Tech -- Announced that starting LB Freddie Coger, who broke his thumb two weeks ago and was expected to miss the opener against Arizona, returned to practice.

Mansfield -- Announced the retirement of Tom Elsasser, the school's all-time winningest football coach, at the end of the 1994 season to become an instructor in the academic and human development department.

Pennsylvania -- Named Bob Bodor part-time offensive line coach; Jim Wilcon part-time linebackers-defensive ends coach; and Larry Woods part-time wide receivers coach.

Vanderbilt -- Named Ben Norton graduate assistant football coach.


Arizona Cardinals -- Waived CB Perry Carter, CB Mose Richardson, QB Chris Swartz, LB Darryl Hardy and DE David Wilkins. Signed DE Karl Dunbar. Placed RB Garrison Hearst on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Atlanta Falcons -- Waived LB Mitch Davis, S Bryan Addison and G Keith Alex. Placed WR Corey Dixon on IR.

Denver Broncos -- Traded QB Tommy Maddox to the Los Angeles Rams for a 1995 fourth-round draft pick.

San Francisco 49ers -- Released S Damien Russell, WR Alfonzo Browning, DE Martin Harrison, DE Junior Bryant, C Garry Pay and RB Shaumbe' Wright-Fair.


San Diego Sockers -- Announced that the CISL has suspended coach Ron Newman for last night's game against the Washington Warthogs for compiling five yellow cards this season.
