Indianapolis Motor Speedway -- Announced that the 1995 Brickyard 400, scheduled for Aug. 5, has sold out.

Robert Yates Racing -- Hired Kenny Wallace to take the place of injured Ernie Irvan at the NASCAR Winston Cup race Saturday in Bristol, Tenn.

Baseball

Chicago Cubs -- Placed Double-A Orlando P Anthony Telemaco on the DL with a sore right arm. Promoted P Jason Ryan from Rookie-level Huntington.

Chicago White Sox -- Announced that Double-A Birmingham OF Michael Jordan, who went 3-for-4 last night and is batting .200, will go to Florida in September for additional work before the club decides whether to send him to an instructional league.

Cleveland Indians -- Released P Matt Turner, who continues to undergo chemotherapy treatments for Hodgkin's disease, so that he can receive the remainder of his contract.

Oakland Athletics -- Announced that 1B Mark McGwire will undergo surgery on his left heel. Dr. Donald Baxter will remove the entire fascia, a sheath of connective tissue that unites skin to underlying tissue and helps supports the arch. Baxter removed part of the fascia last Sept. 24. The new surgery means McGwire will miss the rest of the season -- if there is one.

Basketball

Cleveland Cavaliers -- Announced that G John Battle underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove loose cartilage in his left knee.

Orlando Magic -- Filed a complaint in federal court in Newark, N.J., challenging the NBA's decision to void the team's contract with free-agent F Horace Grant. The six-year agreement was rejected this month on grounds the deal, which included a one-year, option-out clause, violated the league's salary cap.

Sacramento Kings -- Re-signed F Lionel Simmons (15.1 ppg), who had exercised his option in July to become a restricted free agent, to a five-year, $15 million contract.

Boxing

WBA -- Announced that promoters have resumed selling tickets for Michael Moorer's heavyweight title defense against George Foreman on Nov. 5 in Las Vegas.

Colleges

MEAC -- Announced that its men's basketball tournament will be March 1 to March 4 at Morgan State.

Rochester -- Added women's lacrosse.

Rutgers -- Named former U.S. team member Peter Vermes and Tony Faticoni assistant soccer coaches.

Southern Methodist -- Extended the contract of football coach Tom Rossley for four years through the 1998 season.

Stanford -- Suspended starting OLB Jason White and backup QB Mark Butterfield three games for their part in the May 16 vandalizing of a gay-rights statue on campus.

Sue Bennett -- Named John Pate football coach.

Western Maryland -- Named John Plevyak men's soccer coach.

Chicago Bears -- Released WR Greg Primus.

Denver Broncos -- Waived TE Reggie Johnson. Signed QB Will Furrer.

Green Bay Packers -- Signed DL Matt Brock. Waived WR Curtis Duncan. Claimed LB Bernard Carter on waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Indianapolis Colts -- Re-signed DB Jason Belser.

Jacksonville Jaguars -- Announced that they will practice in Stevens Point, Wis., next July.

Kansas City Chiefs -- Waived LB Erick Anderson, LB Jerry Freese, QB Alex Van Pelt and DT Troy Ridgley. Signed QB Steve Matthews and placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list. Placed S Doug Terry on the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform list.

Miami Dolphins -- Re-signed TE Greg Baty. Waived PK Dirk Borgognone.

New England Patriots -- Claimed TE Paul Francisco off waivers. Released TE Kirk Botkin.

New York Giants -- Waived LB Tommy Thigpen. Acquired LB Pete Shufelt off waivers.

New York Rangers -- Named Mike Murphy assistant coach.

San Jose Sharks -- Announced that All-Star G Arturs Irbe is recovering from a fractured finger, nerve damage and a severed artery in his left hand -- injuries suffered when he was bitten last month by his dog.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Signed F Jim Cummins and F Jason Ruff.

Toronto Maple Leafs -- Named goaltending coach Rick Wamsley a full-time assistant.

Vancouver Canucks -- Signed C Yuri Kuznetsov to a multi-year contract.

Portland Pirates (AHL) -- Signed D Brian Curran, F Andrew Brunette and F Jason Christie.

Soccer

FIFA -- Banned Argentine M Diego Maradona from playing nationally or internationally for 15 months and fined him $15,400 for taking a banned stimulant during the World Cup. Also rejected Italian D Mauro Tassotti's appeal to lift his eight-match international suspension for breaking Luis Enrique's nose in a World Cup quarterfinal game against Spain.
