Basketball benefit set for Saturday

A wheelchair basketball game will be played from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Hammond High School in Columbia.

The fee is $3 and includes a raffle ticket for drawing a basketball autographed by Shaquille O'Neal.

Audience members may try wheelchair basketball during half-time.

Children under 12 attend free.

Proceeds will benefit Robert Ardinger's campaign for the House of Delegates, District 13A.

Murphy endorsed by teachers, nurses

Sen. Nancy Murphy, who is seeking re-election in District 12, which includes parts of Howard and Baltimore counties, has added Maryland teachers and nurses to the list of groups endorsing her candidacy.

Sen. Murphy, who has won endorsements from Baltimore County police, firefighters, emergency service personnel and the AFL-CIO, recently obtained backing from the Maryland State Teachers Association and the Maryland Nursing Association.

Business group endorses Yeager

The Business Political Action Committee has endorsed Sen. Thomas Yeager in his bid for re-election to the District 13 seat in the Maryland Senate.

Wanda Hurt receives group endorsements

Wanda Hurt, candidate for House of Delegates District 13A, has received the endorsements of the Sierra Club and the League of Conservationists. She has also been endorsed by the Maryland Chapter of the National Abortion Rights Action League.

Democrats to hold Labor Day picnic

The Howard County Democratic Central Committee will hold its annual Labor Day picnic from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 5 at Cedar Lane West, off Route 108.

Dhillon to hold public reception

The public can meet Neil Dhillon, candidate for Congress from the 6th Congressional District, at a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 31 at Uncle Y. Y.'s Restaurant on Route 40 at Rogers Avenue in Ellicott City.

Friends of Willis plan celebration

The Friends of Casey Willis will sponsor a gala celebration from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sept. 9 at the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City.

AARP set to hold candidate forum

The American Association of Retired Persons Howard County will meet at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Florence Bain Senior Center. The meeting will feature candidates for the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.

Each candidate will be allowed to state his or her views about the national health care plan. The audience will be able to ask questions.

Democratic Club to hold meeting

The Ellicott City Democratic Club will hold its primary endorsement meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Miller branch of the Howard County Library, 9421 Frederick Road.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for members and nonmembers to meet federal, state and local candidates.
