The Chesapeake Bay

August 17, 1994|By Janet Foy

Your arteries, your veins

Drinking

Drinking

From land,

From sky,

From rivers,

From streams,

From the sea,

Flowing through you --

through us

A mixing place

For the Earth's wine.

A place

Of seasons within seasons

Layers within layers

Life within life

A being

Imperfectly perfect,

Perfectly imperfect

And beautiful

Always beautiful

Where the Earth's soul has surfaced.

And where at night,

Wide dark waters commingle

With God's bright universe.

Janet Foy writes from Edgewater.
