Woman screams, scaring off man who tries to rob her

August 17, 1994

A masked gunman who tried to rob a 39-year-old Columbia woman soon after she made a withdrawal at an Owen Brown automated teller machine Monday night was scared off when she began screaming, Howard County police said.

The woman was not injured in the 11 p.m. robbery attempt in the 7100 block of Cradlerock Way, just a bit shaken, said police spokesman Sgt. Steve Keller.

The woman had just made a transaction at the machine in the Owen Brown Village Center Monday night and was sitting in her vehicle when a man approached and pointed a handgun at her face, police said.

At that point, Sergeant Keller said, the woman began screaming and waving her arms. Her actions startled the suspect, who fled, he said.

Two teens charged with vandalizing library

Howard County police have arrested two Owen Brown teen-agers they say are responsible for vandalizing the East Columbia Branch Library last month.

The boys, 16 and 17, were charged Aug. 6 and Aug. 7 with destruction of property for throwing rocks through several windows of the library, which was under construction, and pulling trees and shrubs out of the ground near the parking lot.

Sgt. Steven Keller, county police spokesman, said someone provided police with the boys' names.

"The individual heard about the destruction of property and heard from other people who were involved and the person came to police," Sergeant Keller said. "An officer confronted some suspects and he was able to make a charge."

They were released into their parents' custody and their case has been referred to juvenile authorities, he said.

Sergeant Keller said police still have suspects to identify in other cases of vandalism this summer at the East Columbia Library, which is set to open next week.
