4 hurt in Reese collision 1 driver to Shock Trauma

August 16, 1994

Four people were injured, one seriously, in a car-van collision in Reese yesterday afternoon.

The driver of the car, who was trapped in it by the crash, was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore by MedEvac helicopter.

Two small children and their mother, the driver of the van, were taken to Carroll County General Hospital for treatment, according to state police.

The victims were not immediately identified.

Troopers said the full-size van was northbound on Route 140 at Bethel Road at 5:40 p.m. when a Honda drove east across the highway in front of it. The crash turned the Honda northbound and sent it up on the curb of the right-turn access lane.

The van careened to the right, jumped a curb and came to rest in a small island filled with stone, after knocking down several signs.

The right side of the Honda was crushed in. Rescue workers said the woman who was driving received head and body injuries. They placed her in a body brace and immobilized her for the trip to the trauma center.

Officers said the children in the van did not appear to be seriously injured. One was in a child's safety seat and the other in the front passenger seat, police said.

Rush-hour traffic was allowed to continue in one of two northbound lanes while emergency crews from Reese Fire Company extricated the drivers from the wreckage.
