Kirwan will announce name of Maryland's new AD today

The University of Maryland has called an 11 a.m. news conference for today, when university president William E. Kirwan will introduce the school's new athletic director.

Maryland has been looking for a new athletic director since Andy Geiger resigned in May to become the athletic director at Ohio State. It will be Maryland's fourth athletic director in the past eight years.

Sources said last night that acting director William "Bud" Thomas, the vice president for student affairs, will not be named to a permanent position in the athletic department.

All of the candidates recommended to Kirwan by the search committee had announced that they would not pursue the job. None had ever said he or she was anything more than a consultant.

Those reportedly under consideration were Tulane athletic director Kevin White, East Carolina athletic director Dave Hart Jr., Saint Louis athletic director Debbie Yow and former Miami and California athletic director Dave Maggard, now with the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games.

When reached at his home in Greenville, N.C., last night, Hart said that he has not been contacted about the job. A Tulane spokesman said last night that White has not had any recent conversations with Maryland officials.

Yow said last week that she intended to stay in St. Louis. Maggard could not be reached for comment.

Marie Smith Davidson, Kirwan's executive assistant and the head of the search committee, declined to comment last night when asked whether the new athletic director would come from the list of people recommended to Kirwan.

Kirwan, who was unavailable for comment yesterday, has said that he wanted to have a new athletic director by Sept. 1.
