1,000 expected to compete in triathlon championship

The 1994 Tri-Fed USA National Amateur Triathlon Championship will take place from 7 a.m. to noon today in Howard County.

Nearly 1,000 competitors from across the country will swim 1.5 kilometers (.93 mile), bike 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) and run 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

This event will qualify competitors for TEAM USA for the 1994 Triathlon World Championship, slated for November in Wellington, New Zealand.

The swim will take place in Centennial Lake from the boat launch area and end near the main pavilion.

The cycling route heads west from the park on Route 108, turns right on Homewood Road, which turns into Triadelphia Road, to Triadelphia Mill Road, left onto Green Bridge Road, left onto Howard Road, right on Linthicum Road and back to Triadelphia Road to retrace the route back to the park.

The run heads west on Old Annapolis Road to north on Font Hill Drive to a turnaround at Font Hill Drive and Culverene Road, where runners will retrace the route.

The race is produced by Columbia Triathlon Association Inc. and will be broadcast on ESPN.
