Around the house

* Keep foods cooler for a longer period of time. Fill several balloons halfway with water after partially blowing them up; freeze, then peel away the balloon while still frozen. Place ice balls in cooler.

* Remove unpleasant odors in kitchen. Place 2 tablespoons coffee grounds in a pan with no water and heat briefly on top of stove.

* Once a month, remove front panel of room air conditioner; wash filter in tepid water and mild detergent. Vacuum dust from surfaces before reattaching panel.

* Open clogged drains. Pour 1 cup salt and 1 cup baking soda into drain. Carefully flush with a kettle of boiling water.

* Keep messy scouring pads intact. Place in plastic sandwich bags, within easy reach, on kitchen counter.

* Unclog vacuum cleaner hose. Insert a broom or mop handle into the hose and carefully try to dislodge debris. Be sure to change the paper bag or clean the cloth bag whenever the suction drops noticeably. Small quantities of dust can reduce efficiency.

* Avoid using chlorine bleach to sanitize litter box. Fumes can result through a chemical reaction between the bleach and residual ammonia remaining in the litter box after it has been emptied.

In the garden

* Save stalks, leaves and other leftovers from the summer harvest for the compost bin. Compost enriches soil and increases its ability to hold moisture. Do not compost diseased plant matter.
