Woman alerted by barking dog escapes fire in home

A barking dog saved the life of a 73-year-old Columbia woman early yesterday, alerting its sleeping owner to a dining-room fire in time for them to escape, county fire and rescue officials said.

Betty Wanat of the 6300 block of Dewey Drive, Hickory Ridge, woke to the barking of her pet about 12:45 a.m. Ms. Wanat found that dining-room draperies were on fire. She called 911 and left the house.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 damage, according to fire Lt. Chris Shimer.

Ms. Wanat moved temporarily to a hotel, fire officials said .

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Lieutenant Shimer said.
