A Russian immigrant who arrived in the United States less than a year ago and who was working as a pizza shop deliveryman was shot and killed last night during a robbery on a northwest Baltimore street, city police said.

Police identified the man as Igor Berenshyeyn, 23, of the 9000 block of Samoset Road in Randallstown.

Police are seeking two men, at least one with a handgun, in the slaying.

No arrests had been made in the case, but homicide detectives were interviewing several witnesses.

According to information given to police, the victim, an employee of Pizza Deal in the 4400 block of Park Heights Ave., arrived in the 2700 block of Virginia Ave. around 6:30 p.m. to deliver a pizza.

When no one answered his knocks at the front door of the house where he was told to deliver the pizza, Mr. Berenshyeyn was about to return to his car when he was approached by two men, one with a handgun, who demanded his money, police said.

Either before or after the men robbed the man of an undisclosed sum of money, the victim reportedly pulled out a knife to defend himself and was shot at least once in the left side.

As the two holdup men fled the scene, the mortally wounded deliveryman managed to stagger back to his car and enter the vehicle.

A resident of the area who heard the gunfire dialed 911 and reported a man had been shot.

The victim was taken by an ambulance to Sinai Hospital, where he died shortly after 7:30 p.m.
