Insurance agent gets 18 months for theft

August 11, 1994

A judge has sentenced an insurance agent who admitted stealing $33,000 from her employer to two years in jail.

Melinda Hope Mullenix, 41, pleaded guilty to felony theft in June.

"You are a thief," Washington County Circuit Judge John H. McDowell said Tuesday. "You schemed, you defrauded your employer; there is nothing more to be said."

Judge McDowell sentenced Mullenix to 18 months in jail for the theft. The other six months of the sentence were for her fifth alcohol-related driving offense.

Mullenix fraudulently altered claims between December 1990 and June 1993 by adding the names of family members and friends to accident reports as if they had been injured passengers in car accidents in which they were not involved, according to court records.

"I'm sorry for what has happened," Mullenix told the judge. "I want to get a job, start paying restitution, take care of my family and get on with life."
