DNR proposes new seasons for waterfowl

Maryland released its suggested season dates and bag limits for waterfowl for 1994-1995 yesterday, and while the potential duck harvest will be larger than last year, the Canada goose season for migratory birds probably will be reduced.

The Department of Natural Resources has restricted Canada goose seasons for six years to help rebuild the population of migratory birds in the state and in the Atlantic Flyway.

"Although the restrictions imposed since 1988 have reduced harvest, they have not been sufficient to allow the number of migrant geese in the Chesapeake region to increase significantly," DNR Secretary Torrey C. Brown said.

State waterfowl seasons are set under parameters determined by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The breeding season for Canada geese was not as good as last year's, but was better than the bust of 1992, which triggered severe restrictions on Maryland hunters.

DNR is suggesting two alternative seasons for 1994-1995: 40 days with a one-bird limit per day; or a 30-day season with one bird per day for the first 20 days and two birds per day for the last 10 days.

Duck populations benefited from good breeding conditions in the prairie pothole regions of the United States and Canada, and USFWS has expanded the daily bag limit from three ducks to four during a 30-day season.

NTC Three public meetings have been scheduled to provide opportunities to comment on dates and limits.
