Roche's homecoming is a 'short' 50-miler

It was a homecoming of sorts for James Roche.

Roche -- who has completed 72 marathons, including 11 ultramarathons -- ran in the Howard County Striders' 50-Mile Track Run on Saturday and Sunday. His first marathon was the now-defunct Maryland Marathon.

Roche dropped out of this past weekend's race after 50 kilometers, finishing in 4 hours, 46 minutes. "I had a good marathon," he said Sunday. "I decided I was going to do a 50K and drop out."

"I got serious about running in January of 1978 and decided I was going to do a marathon," said Roche, 62, a resident of Lancaster, Pa. "My first marathon happened to be in Baltimore in 1978. I qualified for Boston."

Along the way, he has run in Maryland in the Last Train to Boston Marathon in Edgewood -- "That's the only flat course that by the time you reach the fourth loop you see hills that you never saw before," he says -- and the Washington's Birthday Marathon in Greenbelt. This year, Roche is stepping up his pace.

"I've been running a marathon a month so far this year," Roche says. "The only other marathon I could do in August was Pikes Peak and since I already ran it, since it is pretty grueling, I made up my mind I wouldn't do it again.

"That's the one that starts at 6,000 feet above sea level and goes up to 14,100 feet. Of course, when you live at sea level all your life, the decision was easy."

Briefly

Olympian Meredith Rainey, who ran the 800 meters in Barcelona and is living in Silver Spring, was a late entry in the Baltimore Road Runners Club's Summer Track Series Championship Wednesday night at McDonogh.
