Baltimore to be host of '97 Grey Cup

August 09, 1994|By Ken Murray

Baltimore will get the 1997 Grey Cup and become the first U.S. city to play host to the Canadian Football League's championship game, a CFL source said yesterday.

But the 1996 game -- which Baltimore had been bidding for -- will go to Hamilton, Ontario, whose Tiger-Cats franchise hopes to use the Grey Cup to pump up sagging attendance and make the club more financially solvent.

An announcement on the 1996 game is expected in Hamilton today. The team also will disclose new financing that should guarantee the Tiger-Cats' stay in Hamilton for at least three years, the source said.

Commissioner Larry Smith, meanwhile, will be in Baltimore for a 2 p.m. news conference tomorrow at Memorial Stadium, the CFLs announced.
