The Concert in the Park's "perennial favorite," The Crabtowne Big Band, returns again this year.

The swinging sounds of the music of Glen Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday in Linthicum Park.

The 18-member band has been

together for about 12 years and is an attraction at the Maryland Inn in Annapolis every Wednesday, from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Concert-goers are welcome to bring a picnic supper to enjoy under the trees. Please bring blankets and chairs for seating.

The concert will be canceled if it rains.

The Concerts in the Park series has been arranged by the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights music committee, led by Jo Barker and Dolores Schuman.

Linthicum Park is on Benton Avenue next to the water tower. Turn off Camp Meade Road (Route 170) at the fire department.

Experts have said that reading aloud to children is an excellent activity to help them build reading skills.

If summer days are getting a little long and children are looking for something else to do, introduce them to a new book. And, if parents or older brothers or sisters read to the younger ones, the Anne Arundel County Library has a few tips to make the reading session beneficial.

When reading aloud to children: set a regular time and quiet, comfortable place to read together; be enthusiastic about books; choose books your child or you both like; try to read together at least 15 minutes a day; talk about the story as you read; ask questions; have your child predict what's going to happen next; be dramatic; stop if your child gets restless; have fun reading together and visit the library often.

The library staff will be glad to help you. Ask at the information desk; they can direct you to a new book or magazine.
