Sixteen swimmers from the Harford YMCA Hurricanes were scheduled to compete in the YMCA National Long Course Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday in Nashville, Tenn.

They were Jeff DeHart, Kate Eyler, Meredith Eyler, Cathy Gyolai, Amy Landis, Kathy Rising and Beth Yonych.

Melinda Cattell, Cindy Cattell, Angela Cuneo, Dan Machovec and Brian Richardson each qualified in three events.

In other local swimming action, 18 members of Emmorton swam times faster than the All-Star Swim Meet time standard at the annual Harford County Swim League trophy meet at Magnolia Middle School and sponsored by the YMCA Aberdeen Penguins.

Nine-year-old Betsy Balaguer met the time standard in the 25-yard breaststroke, finishing the course in 23.04 seconds.

11-12 -- Fallston defeated Edgewood, 5-2, to win the 11-12 Harford County Baseball Tournament championship last Saturday night. Francis Shea struck out eight batters and allowed five hits in the complete-game performance.

With a potent offense, also led by Shea (two hits, two RBIs and two runs), and a scrappy defense (Greg Murray scrambled to recover a wild pitch and tag out an Edgewood base stealer to thwart a fourth-inning rally), Fallston was able to surface from the losers' bracket and win the double-elimination tourney.

Earlier, similar efforts helped Fallston defeat Bel Air, 9-0, and Edgewood, 8-7, to force the showdown.

Against Edgewood in the semifinals, Matt Clary and J.D. Rainey combined for the win.

Fallston trailed, 7-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning, then rallied off a Ryan Cobb lead-off single. Justin Wingate, who singled earlier, stole home to tie the game, 7-7.

Fallston stopped Edgewood in the seventh and then won the game in its last at-bat.

In the regular travel-league season, Fallston posted a 26-9 record. Championship team members include Joshua Jones, David Williamson, Justin Wingate, J.D. Rainey, Kevin Davis, Matt Clary, Ryan Cobb, Matt Barrett, Jeff Schissler, Francis Shea, Gregg Murray, Matt Kyle and Bradley Smith.

9-10 -- Bel Air defeated Emmorton, 8-7, at Hickory Recreation Complex to claim the Harford County Baseball Championship title.

After an earlier loss to Bel Air, Emmorton moved up from the losers' bracket into the championship game. Emmorton took a 7-4 lead into the fifth inning.

But Bel Air rallied for four runs in the next inning and then held off Emmorton to secure the victory.

Championship team members were: Terence Callahan, Gregory Neusch, John Herzog, Matthew Weigl, Mathew Stryjewski, Dan Smullens, Corey Bolchez, Chris Schneider, Brooks Long, Cory Weigman, Ryan Zavislak, Sean Mathis, Mike Costello, Drew Gill and Scott Dixon. The team is managed by Stan Stryjewski.
