Theft suspects arrested after chase, crash

August 02, 1994

Two 14-year-old boys suspected of stealing two motorcycles from Pete's Cycle Co. Inc. led county police early yesterday on a brief chase that ended in an accident at Ritchie Highway and Church Street, officials said.

Both boys were in police custody yesterday afternoon. Northern District detectives were expected to question them for most of the day, said Officer Randy Bell, a department spokesman.

No one was injured in the three-car collision, which occurred after the boys jumped out of the van they were riding in, leaving it gear, Officer Bell said. The van drifted down the street and crashed into a vehicle.

The incident began shortly after 6 a.m. when someone drove a van through the front door of the motorcycle shop in the 800 block of Ritchie Highway in Severna Park, breaking it down. Within minutes, an unidentified woman called police from her car phone and told them she had just seen someone run into the front door of the business.

The woman gave police a description of the van and another car, whose occupants apparently acted as lookouts, Officer Bell said.

County police spotted the van at Ritchie Highway and Americana Circle about 6:30 a.m., said Officer Bell, and the chase began. The van headed up Ritchie Highway with police in pursuit for about 5 minutes until the crash at Church Street.

The pair were apprehended a short distance from the accident scene, Officer Bell said.
