Opportunities available for student service

Carroll County school officials have announced opportunities for students to fulfill the public service requirement for graduation:

* Deer Park Recreation Council: Help is needed with sports activities, including soccer, basketball, karate, dance, working the concession stand and assisting in planning activities (all sports dependent on the season).

* Piney Run Nature Center: Assistants 14 and older are needed to help in the center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at 30 Martz Road, Eldersburg.Information: Elaine Sweitzer, 795-6043.

* The ARC of Carroll County: Students are needed for events such as bingo parties, general maintenance and clerical work at 100 Kriders Church Road, Westminster. Hours vary.

* Carroll Hospice: Students are needed for office support, fund raising, yard work and activities in Westminster. Hours vary.

* Friends of Greenway Gardens: Students are needed to help with maintenance of Greenway Gardens at the Morgan Run Environmental Center on East Nicodemus Road. Work includes weeding, pruning and mulching gardens between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 13, Sept. 10 and Oct. 8. Information: Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks, 857-2103.

* Carroll County Youth Services Bureau: Students are needed to tutor middle school students. Hours vary.

* Carroll County Health Department: Students are needed to organize pamphlets and compile information packets. Students must be in the eighth grade or older and are needed days and some evenings.

* Bear Branch Nature Center: Assistants are needed in the center, as are students to help with landscaping and gardening from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Students must be 14 or older.
