Man is missing after boat capsizes

August 01, 1994

Coast Guard divers will resume a search this morning for a man missing in the Patapsco River near the Francis Scott Key Bridge after his boat capsized last night.

The missing 45-year-old, whose identity was not released, was in a 14-foot Landau, an aluminum-hulled, flat-bottom boat, with a female companion when it capsized sometime after 7:30 p.m. in the water off Hawkins Point at Fort Armistead Park.

The Coast Guard received a report about 8 p.m. from a motorist crossing the bridge who saw the capsized boat in the water.

The man was not wearing a life vest, but the woman -- also not named -- was using a flotation device and was rescued.

"She survived due to the life jacket," said Coast Guard Chief Henry Singleton. "She saw her friend swimming away. He went under, and she didn't see him anymore."
