FLASHBACKS

July 31, 1994|By Diane Mullaly

25 Years Ago (Week of July 20-26, 1969):

* Violence erupted at a teen dance held at the Kiwanis Club Hall at Wallace Park in the Pine Orchard area. A group of 20 to 30 youths armed with clubs, pipes, knives and a sawed-off shotgun, appeared at the hall and created a disturbance, knocking over tables and allegedly stealing about $100 in receipts from the dance. While robbery was originally believed to be the motive for the incident, it was later learned that it may have been retaliation for an alleged racial incident that had reportedly taken place at a dance the previous week.

50 Years Ago (Week of July 23-29, 1944):

* Howard County farmers used German prisoners of war to assist with crop harvesting and other farm chores. The prisoners were transported each day to and from the stockade at Fort Meade.
